Southern France & Italy or Spain?

My wife and I are planning to be in Rome by the end of May for a few days. We will have 6-7 days to either go up the coast in Italy and either drive or take the train all the way to Nice or do Spain(Barcelona/Madrid)instead. Possibly even a combination of different thing. However, I would prefer to prevent over-doing it.

Thereafter we%26#39;re planning to be in London for 4-5 nights and head back home. Your opinion and recommendation is highly valued!

Hi Bobby,

Personally, I think that you are planning on doing way to much in the time (14 - 15 nights) that you have alloted. Accordingly, I urge you to think of this trip as just one of many, and not try to %26quot;see it all ...%26quot;

Instead, I would suggest that you consider taking the train from Rome to Marseilles and picking up a car and spending the next 6-7 days exploring Western Provence as opposed to the Riviera/Cote d%26#39;Azur (Nice ...). You can then fly to London for the final 4-5 nights of your trip out of Marseilles. Another alternative (my choice) would be to spend the entire time, post Rome, in Western Provence - trust me, there is more than enough to see and do there

Nice is a really good base for exploring this area -its a beautiful city in itself with masses to do and see and eat to suit all tastes and also has easy access to towns and villages in the mountains and along the coast.

Hiring a car is not really necessary because the public transport system is so good and cheap

Please forgive me for even thinking it, but is this another one-time-only post from a new member with no declared geographical location that is so general in its enquiries that many members can be spending lots of valuable time on with what result?If OP would first declare his credentials I will respond with my opinions.

Thank you very much for taking the time and replying. Your valuable information is very much appreciated.

You have convinced me not to be doing too much. As to the western province, which towns would you recommend?

I should also mention that initially our plans included Barcelona or Madrid since we%26#39;ve already been to Rome, Florence, Venice and Pisa. Do you recommend not doing Spain at all? Thanks again!

If you haven%26#39;t been to the Cote d%26#39;Azur then I would recommend that you forget Italy and base yourselves in Nice for the 6-7 days that you have. There is so much to do and see in the area that you will most definitely not be bored.

I love Barcelona but given the choice would be in Nice. Haven%26#39;t been to Madrid for many years so I guess it%26#39;s changed beyond recognition!

Going to Spain is a very nice idea, but one better served on a dedicated trip. If you make that move, you%26#39;ll lose an entire day doing it, without having seen a thing on the ground.

Take the train from Paris to wherever, and poke around in Provence. You will enjoy it all. Make a note to shop the stores with table linens in Provence. They make outstanding souvenirs for yourselves, and there are beautiful gifts to be had there as well.
