Bastille Day 2009

My family will be arriving in Paris on July 14th this summer. What special events does the city plan for that day? and also, do most all businesses shut down or will we be able to take the metro and get food fairly easily? TIA!

Public transport will be operating, as will most restaurants and shops catering for tourists. Offices and some shops will be closed.

There is a big military parade down the Champs Elysees in the morning, and fireworks near the Eiffel Tower in the evening.

from Wikipedia: Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is called Fête Nationale (%26quot;National Celebration%26quot;) in official parlance, or more commonly le quatorze juillet (%26quot;14 July%26quot;). IT COMMEMORATES THE 1790 FETE DE LA FEDERATION (emphasis mine), held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution%26quot;. I think that they meant to say that The fete de la federation, not July 14 ,1789, was a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy etc. as the the internet site of the French senate at http://www.14juillet.senat.fr/toutsavoir/ notes that the debate held in 1880 to decide of a National holiday made it very cleat that while July 14, 1789 was a significant date, July 14, 1780 was MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANT AND IMPORTANT.

I so much wish, as a French person, that English speaking people DIDN%26#39;T USE that horrible name of B..day! just call it, as we do, le 14 Juillet!
