Hi booked a nice 5 day holiday for my husband and myself to Nice for his Christmas present. Always knew it was not the cheapest place to stay but have been hearing horror stories about the cost of eating in Nice. Can anyone recommend somewhere reasonable to eat and drink. We are located in an apartment in the old town. Thanks

In fact Nice is not a particularly expensive city in comparison to other European cities - certainly cheaper to eat out than in London, Edinburgh or Dublin. Of course the current weak value of the Sterling will make things seem more expensive for UK visitors.
Our favourite great value places for dining in NIce are:
La Petite Biche, rue d%26#39;Alsace-Lorraine
Chez Davia, rue Grimaldi
La Tapenade, rue Sainte-Réparate
Bar de la Bourse, Place Saint-François (open only for lunch)
Chez Palmyre, rue Droite (usually only open for lunch)
René Socca, rue Miralheti
They all serve excellent local cuisine at very reasonable prices. They are all also popular with local regulars so get there at opening time to ensure a table.
Bon appétit!

Nice is the best value place I know for eating out. There are literally hundreds of restaurants, so competition keeps prices down. People complain that it is %26#39;touristy%26#39; but I like the Cours Saleya, the flower market area. There are dozens of other good value places in the old town, many of which do a three course meal for around 15 euro or less. There are also scores of places that do a %26#39;sandwich%26#39;, a delicious filled baguette for a few euro.
Of course, the rich need to spend their money on something, so there are places where you can pay 200 euro per person if you want to.

Last December we discovered O%26#39;Palermo, a very nice Italian restaurant on the rue Masséna. It%26#39;s near another favorite of ours, La Pizza (with the world%26#39;s best!). That street is bursting with restaurants, most of them moderately priced.
In Vieux Nice we like L%26#39;Ecurie and Spaghettissimo, along with the more upscale La Voglia. The latter has terrific Italian-style food and large portions; the baked rigatoni is easily enough for two to share.

A big vote also for La Pizza. Watch out for the red pepper olive oil tho%26#39; that is brought to your table unless you love HOT!! For 10 euros you get a pizza large enough to share (tho%26#39; we never did) We have been all over Italy and La Pizza pizza is the very best of Italy in France.

If you like seafood, I%26#39;d recommend the Cafe de Turin near Place Garibaldi in Nice Old Town, we had a great lunch there for about 50 euro (for 2). Also there was a nice Portuguese place where we ate for 30 euro (2 of us) at lunch but the name escapes me now.

A lot of places now have %26#39;suggestions anti-crise%26#39; or %26#39;menus anti-crise%26#39; and cheap espresso coffee because of the financial crisis but Nice is good value for money IMO.
You can get really cheap food and wildly expensive stuff -it really depends where you go but menus are posted outside so you should have an idea of prices before you go in
You can ask for tap water - une carafe d%26#39;eau and have house wine by bottle or carafe.
lunch menus are usually cheaper than dinner
