Lille and Aix en provence

We%26#39;ll be arriving from London via Eurostar so i guess the most convenient city into France is Lille

1) If so, we will base here for 2 days and do day trips out.

Can you advise where can we go out of Lille (interested in quaint /old village or town) - we have no car %26amp; will be depending solely on local bus or train

2) If Lille is not an interesting city can you suggest which city is better (would prefer minimum transfer of train after arriving via Eurostar out of London)

After that we will be based in Aix en Provence for 5 days and do day trips out

3) Marseille %26amp; Cassis - by local bus : Does the bus run frequently? anyone has the bus time-table

4) Is it as easy to get on the local bus to Avignon and Nice ?

or we should take the local train or TGV instead?

5) Where else can we venture out by local transportation out of Aix?

6) If we want to go to Luberon and Paul St Paul de Vence, please advise how do we get there on our own?

7) Is it cheaper to get point-to-point ticket from this website www.idtgv.com/en/. compared to purchasing a 3-day France RailPass?

Is there a reason you have decided to go to Lille rather than Paris? I would definitely visit Paris - it is a wonderful city.

If you don%26#39;t have a car then the best option for you is to stay in Paris.

Lille is ok but getting out into surrounding towns and villages by public transport is extremely difficult for the first time visitor.

There are half-day and full-day %26#39;Battlefield%26#39; tours for those who wish to see the sites and Memorials to the World Wars.

Other than that Taxis would be better than local bus and train services but the cost may be prohibitive.

My recommendation would be go to Paris.

Lille is an intersting city which has really developed its tourism infrastructure, inluding information in English, since the openin of Eurostar. While the area is not renowned for pretty vllages there are a number of attractive towns that can be visited by train quite easilly. I would recommend Arras whih has two breathtaking %26quot;grand places%26quot;.

Ask on the Provence Forum about public transport around Aix-en-Provence.

If you can book the lon distance legs of your journey in advance it will probably work out cheaper than getting a rail pass. Buying local tickets as you need them need not be expensive.

For general information on rail travel see www.seat61.com

For timetables see www.voyages-sncf.com or www.ter-sncf.com

Thank you all for your suggestion.

Do you think 1 day is enough to do both Marseille and Cassis ?

|||

I wouldn%26#39;t say so - Marseille is a big city, and even in 1 day you won%26#39;t be able to see everything there.
