Will be arriving into Airport at Toulouse and renting
auto for drive to Mirepoix. Looking at the Michellin
map I see several possible routes. Which would be the
fastest/best way to get there? Many thanks.

The fastest isn%26#39;t always the bestest... but assuming fast is preferable after a transatlantic flight take the autoroute A61 east.
Here%26#39;s a link to the google map with the route on it:

It%26#39;s 88 Km and should take a little over an hour or so.

The autoroutes, shown on Michelin maps as two red lines with a yellow line between them, are the French equivalent of US Interstates and usually about as interesting. They are mostly toll roads, and provide a quick and unexciting way of getting between places.
Roads shown in red are main roads between towns. They are mostly two-lane blacktops in good condition. Roads shown in yellow are less important, and those shown in white are minor roads. All will have good surfaces, and provide a much more interesting way of travelling.
You can get an idea of the width of the roads by looking at how wide they are drawn on the map.

Fastest and most uninteresting:
From Toulouse Airport follow ring road and signs for Carcasonne, Montpellier until you see Foix (Peage) on a blue sign, then follow that. It will take you out on the A61/E09 heading east. Leave this on the exit for Foix A66/E09. This turns into the N20/E09 (you%26#39;ll pay toll at the end of the autoroute - make sure you go into the manned toll booth as some foreign credit cards don%26#39;t work in the machines - or pay cash!) Pass exits for Pamiers and just south take exit signposted Mirepoix D119. Watch out for unmarked camera cars parked on the side of the road on the road to Mirepoix - currently a favourite place for them.
