August without air conditiioning

We are thinking about renting a lovely appartment in Nice but see that it has no air conditioning. Since we will be staying from Aug. 2-5, is air conditioning a neccessity? We are from the Midwest US and I get very cranky when too hot!

It depends a lot on the actual building you will be staying in - older buildings tend to be built to cool down summers [and therefore are hard to heat in winter]

Its a generalisation but newer buildings tend to be warmer in winter and also warmer in summer.

Most people circulate the air with windows open and then shut the shutters and maybe also use electric fans - air conditioning isn%26#39;t common here

It%26#39;s the humidity that makes you need power-assisted cooling at height of the season. I wouldn%26#39;t dream of trying to cope without at least an electric fan which is cheap enough to buy locally and jettison.

So Nice is very humid in August, too. Of course, we will be out and about all day but do need to sleep comfortably. Perhaps I need to look for other apartments. There are four of us and we think apartment renting is more comfortable and cost-efficient.

In my opinion air-con is a neccessity in July and August, I couldn%26#39;t imagine trying to sleep without it. The main reason being that if you live in an apartment in town then you are unlikely to be able to leave your windows open at night for breeze as then you won%26#39;t be able to sleep from street noise, the road cleaners and bin men start up at around 5am and there is always the really annoying mopeds screeching around.

Look for something else, there are hundreds in Nice to choose from at www.holiday-rentals.co.uk

I agree with firstladybush.

Everyone leaves their windows open in the summer - if on a low floor they shut the shutters - people on high floors have windows open all night with or without shutters shut.

If there is a breeze at night - very common in Nice though not so common in Antibes then the windows need to be held open with something wedged in the corners to prevent them banging

Old Nice is noisy all the time, summer or winter but many other parts of central Nice are incredibly quiet at night.
