Hotel that won't break the bank!

We are looking to stay in Corsica during the first week of June and we%26#39;re looking for hotels or apartments that won%26#39;t break the bank!

I like the look of Calvi because we want lovely beaches and places to potter about.

Any thoughts on hotels that are good value?

Any help much appreciated,

Hello Ponpod, Last year three of us stayed at the hotel Cyrnea in Calvi.

It%26#39;s a small, family run hotel providing quiet, clean basic accommodation, breakfast is included, and it%26#39;s only a few minutes walk through the pine woods from the quieter part of the lovely beach at Calvi, also about twenty minutes walk from the center of Calvi.

I posted a review and some photos of it in the hotel review page, if you are interested.

all the best alf tupper.

What is your approximate budget per night ? In the 3 star hotel category in Calvi (all with websites to check prices for 09) I could recommend Hotel St. Christophe, La Caravelle and the Regina Hotel. Calvi in the first week of June sounds good, not too crowded but plenty going on. Beach is lovely too.

Thanks for the advice alf tupper. I am currently looking at this hotel and have managed to get a price of about £60 per night. I think this is pretty good and it looks v. nice

Thanks White Family. I have looked at your recommendations and they look lovely. Unfortunately our budget is a fair bit less than their prices.

I think Calvi in June will be wonderful. I can%26#39;t wait!!

Any restaurants or other recommendations will also be much appreciated.

Do you think we could get away with not hiring a car?

Also any idea how much it costs to get to Calvi from bastia airport?

Thanks

Wow £60 per night in June in Calvi sounds like a great price, and as Alf says the beach by the hotel is quieter than up towards the port end.

Restaurants in Calvi have been discussed in this forum so if you do a search on tripadvisor some ideas will come up. Last September we found Chez Fifi in the middle of town down a side street and thought it was good value for money. The set formule menus with a pichet of wine can reduce the cost of eating out. There is a decent pizzeria by the steps to the citadel. You will be spoilt for choice and in low season the restaurants will be pleased to see you ! Have alook at U Fanale%26#39;s set menus and prices (a 10 min walk up from Hotel St Christophe), the food and courtyard setting here are good and if you stick to the formule, not too expensive.

Bastia to Calvi has also been discussed on this forum. If you can hire a car, it would be worth it as you can explore a bit, up in the Balagne villages etc. but with the coastal train you can scoot up the coast to Ile Rousse and stop off at beaches on the way.

Just talking about Corsica makes me want to go back ! Hope you have a great holiday.

Hello ponpod, I%26#39;m certain you will find the Cyrnea to your liking, and the beach is superb, you just turn left out of the gates of the Cyrnea 200mtrs toward the supermarket, and head through the pinewoods. If you are flying into Bastia on Easy jet on the Sunday, the only option you have is to hire a car, I%26#39;m arriving in July and I%26#39;ve looked at all ways of getting over to Calvi. The taxi fares are shocking!! the train times are OK on the arrival dates but no good for the return journey, and the buses are non existent. You will get plenty of advice here for car hire, but the best deal i have found to date is with %26quot;SIXT%26quot;.

There are some lovely restaurants in Calvi, we loved %26quot;La Candella%26quot; hidden away in the shaded streets up in the citadel.

The trip on the coastal train to Ille Rousse is not to be missed, relax with a cold beer sitting under the plane trees in the in the beautiful town square, also great restaurants in the lovely town.

If you do find an alternative way of getting over to Calvi please let us know. Thanks, Alf

Thanks again White Family %26amp; Alf Tupper.

I have also found out that an airport transfer to Calvi doesn%26#39;t exist on a Sunday so will be resorting to hiring a car. I%26#39;ve found Corsica Isula to be the cheapest.

I think it will be handy having a car so I%26#39;m not too worried. £500 for a return taxi is hilarious.

I think i will book the hotel because it sounds great. I can%26#39;t wait for our holiday now!!

Our honeymoon in July travelling from Rome to Lake Garda was fabulous but I%26#39;m so looking forward to Corsican beaches.

Thanks for your help and I hope you enjoy your trip Alf, and the White family get themselves booked up again soon!

Hi Ponpod, just a thought, if you haven%26#39;t booked the Cyrnea yet, you may want to take a look at the self catering appartments %26quot;A Merula%26quot;. They are really lovely, and quite reasonable out of high season.

If you want direct contact with Mdme Spinosi_Consorti, I can give you her e mail address.

all the best alf.

Talking of not breaking the bank, I had an e-mail today from Holiday Options offering a week in the 3 star Le Home apartments in Calvi, pool view, one week departing 10 May or 17 May for £399 which sounded a good price. That price would obviously include transfers from whichever airport you fly into. From memory Le Home apartments are quite good.

Regarding car hire - I suggest that you use moneysupermarket.com - price comparison website. It will give you the best deals from various providers and if you only need a small car you should be able to get something for well under £200
