New Law--Students Free into Museums?

I%26#39;ve heard rumors that a new law will go into affect in April 2009 that requires museums to allow students in at no charge.

Is it true?

If yes, do you need a student ID?

Will an American student ID be accepted?

Thanks.

YUP...As of April 4th SOME %26#39;national%26#39; museusm (most of the museums administered by the City of Paris are already free to everyone-- www.paris.fr/portail/english/Portal.lut… ) but...NOT all museums...

…gouv.fr/culture/…artgrat_musees.html

and YES you will need some sort of student ID to prove that you%26#39;re a student...and not just some overly clever, cheap tourist.

I have NOT heard about the student law. The law that I KNOW Sarkozy put into effect on April 1, is ANYONE under 26, student or not. There are still reduced prices for students who are older than 26.

And it is only for national museums.

The City of Paris museums have been free to the general public for a while now.

Does not include special exhibitions.

I got in free to Saint Chapelle without having to show any ID with a ticket for 18 - 25s.

According to the website of the prime minister and a press release from the Ministry of Culture, since April 4th, access to the permanent collections of museums and national monuments is free for everyone under 26 years from one of the 27 european countries.

Which would mean that this law does not apply to anyone from outside the EU.

I have the impression that not all museums and national monuments make this distinction. The website of the association of national museums, for example, just says they%26#39;re free for anyone under 26; but the Arc de Triomphe (a national monument) now has a special rate (half price) for students from outside the EU.

The law was announced on April 4 and will come into effect as of next Saturday, April 11.

It concerns approx. 50 national museums and 100 national monuments such as The Ac de Triomple, Mont Saint Michel, etc....

It only applies to EU citizens under 26.

Thanks to all. I guess my American students won%26#39;t qualify.

Glad to see this confirmed as I just saw it on the Versailles site. under 18 free and EU nations under 25 free.

So if I understand it correctly anyone under 18 is still free.
