My husband, 9 year old daughter and I are staring in Paris for about 5 days -then we will pick up a car and head towards Annecy (where we have a place to stay for about 10 days) but on the way to Annecy is the

Burgundy wine area - any thoughts as to where to stop and visit for a few days? this is beginning of July -

My choice would be the small town of Beaune. It has lots of places to stay, restaurants, shops and of course is a famous historic wine centre.

Beaune is wonderful place. I thoroughly loved visiting the town when I was on a 6 passenger barge cruise in 1996.

Here is another area to consider too.

We stayed at Vezelay and really enjoyed the pretty town which was a base for pilgrims. There is a beautiful church at the top of the hill to St Mary Magdalen, restored by Viollet le Duc, the gardens and buildings of the church, wonderful interiors, a great main street leading up to the church with wine shops belonging to vineyards and a fantastic hotel, the poste et lion d%26#39;or which has been revamped by a young couple in beautiful fabrics and furniture, mostly in shades of butter yellow and blues. A really good dining room too.

It can get really hot out there in Burgundy in July. Not all hotels have air conditioning and they can get really stifling. Burgundians seem to have a strange idea of hotel showers--no curtains, and the shower head operates like a garden hose.

With your kids, stop by a hypermarket like Leclerc in Auxerre right off the autoroute and stop in the little deli section for a different kind of French dessert scene. It%26#39;s also a cheap place for gasoline, Michelin local maps...and wine.

How about head out into the Jura and see some of the rivers that jet out from underground? The water is freezing cold so the wind tunnels associated with these sources can be quite refreshing on a hot day. They make nice picnic spots. When you get to Annecy, there will be waterfalls too.

Go to your local library and see if you can get your hands on a Michelin green guide for Burgundy/Jura. It%26#39;s full of ideas.

Darth, you should genteely wet yourself, turn off the shower, soap yourself all over and then rinse off. Of course you should really be having a deep soaking bath but tourists sometimes expect something different. At least the shower is over the bath or sits on the edge like a telephone.

Now if you go to Greece, you can get a ceramic square on the floor, no curtain of any sort and a fierce shower that wets the whole bathroom.Plus you deposit used toilet paper in a bin because the pipes can%26#39;t cope with it.

Different strokes for different folks.
