Hi: My daughter, as a college graduation present has asked to visit MOntPellier for the summer. She plans to enroll at Institut Languistique Adenet for five weeks to study French. (July-Aug). She will be staying at the Institue. She also intends to visit the sourrounding areas. Do you think it is safe for a 23 year old to travel alone? Is this Institute a good place to perfectionate the language? Which cities are around Montpellier that she could visit on weekends? Thank you in advance...Ana Maria Trevino-Mexico

I spend a good amount of time in this general area and consider it as safe as anywhere. There is good bus/train service to surrounding areas and she%26#39;ll probably meet other students and will probably not be alone for too long.
I do not know details about the Institute but I am sure it is a good area in which to study. I think there are two good ways to learn a foreign language:
1. close relationships with native speakers
2. studying any other subject as long as it is taught in French only.
As for the weekends, she%26#39;ll know about Nimes, Pont du Gard, Avignon, Uzès, Camargue, and maybe even Collioure and Carcassonne but most likely she%26#39;ll be on the beaches of Palavas les Flots:

anama,, at 23 my friend and I travelled all over Europe, for three months. That was some time ago.. but, now, a girl who used to work with me is now in Europe for 2 months and she is only 18 years old!!
If your daughter has some common sense she will be fine. I am sure at 23 she does know a bit about how to be careful( not to walk alone late at night down deserted streets, and not to drink too much, etc etc) .
When she gets to the school she will also meet other young girls , and I am sure they will take trips on the weekends together, so she will probaly not be alone very much.
