Kir Breton - help!

When we got engaged in Brittany recently, I drank (quite a lot of!) the region%26#39;s popular Kir Breton.

Can anyone suggest which make of cider goes into it, as I am trying to source the exact liquer so that I can have it as my arrival drink for our wedding!

I have a feeling it is Cassis and Pear Cider...?

The original Kir was made with Crème de Cassis and Bourgogne Aligoté wine (a very dry white).

Having not previously hear of the Brittany variety, I should assume that crème de Cassis and Cider is a safe bet as to core ingredients. Whether the cider is Pear or Apple would be difficult for me to say but Apple Cider probably has a larger following of drinkers.

According to Wikipedia, any Breton cider will do. Failing that, use Normandy Cider, and have a Kir Normand instead!!

CIDER is made with apples. PERRY is made with pears, hope that helps a bit!! (and IMO probably a sparkling cider will be better)

Perhaps you could find your favourite west-country cider and try that??

Congratulations on your engagement - I found a couple of sites suggesting kir normand has calvados as well as cider so you may need a couple more holidays to investigate all the options ;-)

I think it is a pretty recent invention, not having noticed it on any menu until a year or so ago. I haven%26#39;t been to Brittany for a few years but it has certainly spread to creperies in other parts of France. So if you get hold of decent local cider and a bottle od cassis try Kir Devon.

Thanks for the advice! A couple of good ideas for us to think on!

Have discovered is Kerisac cider which I think I can source in the UK, which is handy!

Thanks again.

If this may help, pear cider is called %26quot;poiré%26quot; in France. But it is made in Normandy, not in Brittany. Kir Breton is made with cider (apple cider, preferably the dry sort) and crème de cassis.
