Marais

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is the Marais? and where exactly is it located? Thanks :)

It%26#39;s in the 3rd and 4th arrondissement, roughly in the triangle formed by the Hôtel de Ville (city hall), the Place de la Bastille and the Place de la République. For a good description, have a look at this wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Marais

This is a nice web site for the Marais. This particular segment features 3 walks through the Marais, how%26#39;s your French :-) It has links to some of the restaurants and hotels. Check out the link to their newsletter, it will give you a flavor of what goes on in the Marais.

The old Kings and nobility lived here before Versaille, and by some miracle it escaped the wrecking ball of Napoleon the III. The architecture is stunning. I feel it has a little more of a neighborhood feeling than the 5th and 6th, both lovely places to visit.
