Montmartre and the Red Light District

I have booked an apartment here: http://maps.google.fr/maps?f=q%26amp;hl=fr%26amp;geocode=%26amp;q=1+rue+felix+ziem+paris%26amp;sll=48.889692,2.33326%26amp;sspn=0.010313,0.018797%26amp;ie=UTF8%26amp;ll=48.889284,2.335346%26amp;spn=0.005157,0.009398%26amp;z=17%26amp;iwloc=addr

Am I too close to the red light district? My fiance and I would prefer to avoid the district! I swear all the research I did on Montmartre, prior to booking, was positive...now I%26#39;m finding things like %26quot;less tourist friendly%26quot; and %26quot;red light district%26quot; and %26quot;not the safest place%26quot;...I know the truth is always in the middle, but I%26#39;d welcome comments. Thanks so much, this site is a blessing!

No, you%26#39;ll be fine there. The area doesn%26#39;t look seedy at all. My S/O and I accidentally booked a place a little further south of yours (this was before we knew better, on one of our first trips), and ended up right by Moulin Rouge and all the sex shops and we hardly noticed a thing out of the ordinary. Had we walked down the street in the other direction, we would have figured it out! But we never felt unsafe and were blissfully ignorant of what was going on down the street. Back to your neighborhood, I have friends who love that area and frequently stay near there because it%26#39;s very quiet and non-touristy.

ok, wonderful. sex shops and seedy things like that won%26#39;t bother us...just want to be safe. thank you so much.

I love Mont Martre. The area of Pigalle is where the seedy stuff is. It is really a small portion of the area and nothing to worry about. We used to avoid Pigalle, now we walk there during the day all the time. At night it is busy and rowdy so I still avoid Pigalle at night.

The rest of Mont Marte is great as far as I%26#39;m concerned. Somewhat hilly and steep in places, if that is a problem for you.

Your apartment is on the otherside of the butte, the otherside of the mountain, from the seedier part of Montmartre. If you wander over that way, and it will take some effort, walk down the center of the boulevard along Boulevard de Clichy and you will never be bothered by the red light district. This is one of the coolest parks in Paris. You cross the street and walk down the sidewalk, you are fair game for the barkers.

Your apartment is in one of the nicest residential areas of Paris.

%26gt;%26gt;just want to be safe%26lt;%26lt;

Do not worry. Everywhere in central Paris is safe.

Drag the little yellow person at the top of the zoom slider in Google Maps and drop him on the street in front of your apartment... now use the arrows to navigate around your neighborhood to see what it%26#39;s like...

There are three things that put you at risk in Paris - pickpockets, traffic and motor scooters.

The pickpockets are real artists at their trade. Unless you happen to put your hand in your pocket at the appropriate time and find a hand already there, you%26#39;ll never have any idea of when the act occurred. There will have been no threat, no attack, no violence. This is not a mugging. It%26#39;s just a working man plying his trade.

Montmartre is my favourite area of Paris, but every time I go to the city, there are fewer and fewer of the old hotels. The get merged and managed out of all their charm, refurbished into the 21st century (while I preferred them in all their 19th century shabbiness), and had their rates raised by 150%. Anyway, I stay there when I can find accommodation in one of the remaining old 2 star hotels, and I enjoy every minute of it.

I often travel without my husband and have never been unsafe in Montmartre, no matter how close I was to the %26quot;red Light%26quot; district. In Paris it%26#39;s not as organized as it is in Hamburg and Amsterdam, and the sex shops are not as in your face, either. You%26#39;ll probably notice these things only if you go looking for them.

As to the description of being %26#39;less tourist friendly%26quot;, if you find a cafe you like and return to it a second or third time you%26#39;ll no longer be a tourist. You%26#39;ll be a regular, and probably have %26quot;your own table%26quot;. They just make you into a temporary local, so I guess, in its own way it is less tourist friendly, but not in the way that poster implied.

Bon voyage.
